"What kind of hero are you now?"

Those were the words reportedly spoken by one of four men who beat a Canadian Master Corporal who had achieved the Medal of Valour.

The story is here.

So here's the story...

Master Corporal Collin Fitzgerald returned to his hometown bar greeted as a hero by many of his childhood friends. These friends were thrilled to see him walk through the door of the bar. Because he wasn't the same man they had grown up with. He was a hero now. A hero in the truest sense of the word. But in that moment four men made a decision -- a decision I hope everyone in this country disagrees with.

"WHAT KIND OF HERO ARE YOU?"

Master Corporal Fitzgerald was beaten with an unknown object by four men to the point of a broken news, two black eyes, ten stitches and a broken foot.

This man returned from Afghanistan a real full-blooded hero without a scratch on him. Upon his return he was beaten because he dared return home.

Who did it?

Travis Baldwin. Remember that name. Because it is this 21-year old that will appear in a Morrisburg court on May 1, charged with aggravated assault. However, that is not enough. What this man did is inexcusible. He, without any shadow of a doubt should be sitting in a court room on trial for treason. Maybe these people who dare to call themselves Canadian would than learn what our men and women overseas do for them.

Maybe you should get your story straight before writing such things, you got one half of the story. When he says "I don't even remember getting hit," he said. "I went and sat down at one of the tables, and next thing I knew I woke up and had a hole in my head and I couldn't walk on my foot," Ever think that he was drunk and could have been one of the original instigators in this altercation? At this same establishment another member of the military beat up civilians on another occasion, was this on the news? Were there charges? Was there a big cry for justice? The answer is NO. Events like this happen all the time and no one says a thing. In the papers and on the news he's not giving all the information, or maybe he doesn't even remember because he was drunk? You sit back now and say he is such a bad person for doing this, what if one of your friends was at a bar and was attacked by another individual, do you and your friends intervene to help your friend or do you sit back and allow this to happen? This is a simple bar fight, the only reason this has got any sort of attention is because this man is now a "hero", if it was the other way around no one would have heard of it outside the town. So because he fought for his country he can come back and provoke other civilians in a bar? Just because he lost this particular altercation it is now a huge deal. He calls it a "sneak attack" when in fact witnesses say he was the one who originally struck another person in the bar. Plain and simple, this has been made bigger than it really was.

Anonymous: I'll take the word of the national hero and the witnesses who saw the incident over the word of the scumbag who did it any day.

If the witnesses are confirming his sotry, why has there only been one person charged in this "gang" attack? For someone who "doesn't remember" after getting hit with a "sneak attack" how does he know there were four, or seven, or maybe just one?? If he didn't see them or remember them, and no witnesses say otherwise, how is that credible information?

I managed to talk to some friends that were there that night, and to make a long story short, this guy tried to start one fight, finally started another and got knocked out with the 3rd punch. As for the "what kind of hero are you now?" That would be because mr.military tough guy was ranting about it while starting all of this. When he was down after 3 he wasn't so tough. This is a case of a mouthy military member who shot his mouth off and lost, now the only thing wounded is his face and pride.

Is this the same "anonymous" making the rounds on all the blogs about this story? Are you too much of a coward, like the guys you are defending, to even sign your name? You don't know shit, and you're as much an asshole as the THREE guys now charged with this disgusting act. The best thing for these guys is to spend some time over in Afghanistan getting shot at and bombed and see how much of a hero they are - IF they have the good fortune to come back in one piece. I would love for any one of the forces guys I know to get their hands on these guys and show them what it's like to be really tough. Nothing but a bunch of cowards - they make me sick. After everything that Fitzgerald did for his country (that includes you guys, you morons), he comes back to his hometown and gets treated like this? That's the most disgusting thing I've ever heard of. I hope the judge in this case knows someone or has a family member in the forces and these guys get what they deserve.

Actually I can't leave my name as I don't have an account bud. Plus is your real name Jody? Jody what? What the hell does it matter, you don't know me I don't know you. But I do know the people on both sides in this event. Wait until court, the real witnesses will be there, not a soldier on the news with wounded pride. There are many people out telling what really happened now not the lies that have been spun. So I can go over to Afgan then come back and start fights and blame it on others? Way to think logically, this had nothing to do with him being in the military. "what kind of hero are you now" comes from him ranting about being so tough and a hero as he was going to win the fight which he started.

Oh did I mention that a twelve year old was told to burn in hell because of the media and people like you taking this out of control? He doesn't even have anything to do with it other than his name. You people are sick

I won't leave my name either. Others have said the same types of things and are receiving death threats. I know for a fact that there are soldiers coming from Trenton this weekend to find him(and or anyone really) and have sent death threats already, etc.

The guy who beat him up is a fucking loser, but so is Fitzgerald. Yes he's a hero, yes he saved those peoples lives. He's also a drunk who likes to start barfights.

also..

The only witness statement the cops are taking are from Fitzgeralds fiance, and one friend(who was outside). Others have called police asking to make statements, stating they are witnesses and are denied being talked to.

I live in Las Vegas, I would be glad to get rid of the goons in my town (the mob mayor for one). Here are some posts made by Morrisberg locals with their names on it...

Travis has been a little sh*t his whole life so this is no big surprise. My wife went to high school with these giabronis and hearing their names was no surprise whatsoever.

Unfortunately, there’s a Travis, Ian, and Jeremy along with a couple friends each in every crowd in the Morrisburg area. It’s nearly impossible to have a drink anywhere without running into at least one of them trying to cause trouble. Then, go to a major event where the whole town comes out and it’s a guarantee that there’s going to be a fight.

But, one has to be careful in a small town because everyone knows everyone. It was likely pretty easy to find out who it was. I’ll be surprised if there isn’t another name or two that get thrown into this.

Travis is the victim? How about that kid that he chased into a house and beat the crap out of last year? Never heard how that ended but I guess he was the victim there too.

The latest thing I heard was Mrs. Baldwin (Travis’ mom) was telling anyone who will listen that it’s not Travis’ fault because he’s never been the same since the big divorce.

Give me a break. This little punk has been sheltered his whole life. It’s about time he accepted some responsibility for his actions.

to tell you the truth warren.. people from Morrisburg aren’t trying to dilute the situation. there was a fight, and it was 4 on 1.. which was witnessed by many people.. especially family of mine that was there right near Travis when the whole thing started. we don’t try to dilute the situation to make it look less bad on us because when it comes down to it. it wasn’t the town’s fault the town should not get everyone commenting on the people in the town.. it was the 4 scumbags who have given our town this bad reputation now.. and believe me, i know a lot of people from Morrisburg and from being there myself i am not diluting the situation and who are probably just as/even more angry than alot of people elsewhere. Not to mis-interpret this as me lecturing you (warren) i just want to make sure that people that read this don’t get the wrong impression.
i am actually agreeing with you in a sense.. it wasn’t a one on one bar fight.. there was 4 on 1 vs. Fitzgerald and you’re right I’m pretty sure his (travis and his friends) goon status has definitely intimidated people from coming forward… along with his 3 other p*ssy friends (Jeremy stewart, ian tate, and evans bedzra -> who is trying to get out of this but was definately, definately involved). so i say this, don’t say any bad remarks about our town and about our people, only the 4 disgusting individuals who have decided to be exceedingly stupid..

oh and onlooker about the comment where travis never said ” you aren’t so tough now” he actually did say it, and i heard about it before it even hit the news.. so when ur defending your dear travis baldwin and his scum friends, get the facts, and by the facts, i mean stuff that hasn’t come out of their mouths.. because they’ve been lying since they learned how, back in kindergarden. you must be family because only family could be so blind

Funny that most (cowards) prefer to post anonymously.

I note that the coward who runs
"A Step To The Right" has deleted my post which was, in intent, much the same as the one posted here.

The commentary over there, as the commenters and poster may find to their cost, will be actionable if the aforesaid Travis is found innocent. Just so you know.

Thank you Bert for your post - I too live in a town where there are some people you wish would just leave everyone else in peace. Morrisburg obviously has a few of the same kind of people - every small town does.

Anonymous:
I have never seen injuries like the ones that Collin has from a simple bar fight. I don't care how much he did or didn't have to drink - why do 4 guys gang up on anyone? Especially if the one guy ALLEDGEDLY was drunk. A bunch of real tough guys. COWARDS. Every one of them and they will get what they deserve. Maybe you should pick up a law book, or talk to a cop and see what the law says about events like this. One-on-one fights are one thing, this was definitely not a fair fight at any point. Whether he's a soldier or not, it's not acceptable! Maybe you're as much of a goon as they are...I don't know, maybe we're hearing from Travis himself?

By the way - I don't have an account either...maybe try using the "other" option for identity. And yeah, I'm using my real name. How old are you? Probably about 20, right? I'm also not your "bud". Get back to us with something intelligent.

Jordan: Sorry for turning your blog into a mudslinging-fest...I just can't not say anything to this jerk.

I don't know this military guy but i've met travis. not quite the nice guy his friends are making him out to be. he's been in more than his fair share of trouble. he's avoided being charged more than once from incidents in morrisburg and ottawa. i'm surprised any of his friends would stand up for him. it's about time someone has the courage to stand up to him. as for fitzgerald he may have been being mouthy who knows, but how many people can say they've never been mouthy before when they were drinking did you deserve to get beat up that bad probably not!

So why don't all the other so-called witnesses come forward and give their statement to the authorities???
And do't hand out the crap that they are being selective in who they are allowing to gigve statements.
I don't care what was said, ''NO ONE DESERVES A BEATING AS THE ONE THAT WAS INFLICKTED ON FITZGERALD''

Bullies (which is what these individuals are)usually and always get what they deserve in one way or another.

SUCKS TO BE THEM

THink about this!!!
Fitzgerald got mouth and wanted to fight....
He got punched and knocked out on the 3rd punch....that's how he got a broken nose and black eyes...
On his way down he was sooo drunk he hit his head on the table and that's way he needed stitched...
so the only other injury was when he got up and started screaming and no one would listen..that's when he got mad kicked the pool table and walked out of the bar...

I guess we'll I'll see what happens in court when fitzgerald is made out to be the liar he is...

Well, its been a few years since this happened. Any idea why it hasn't come out in the media that these guys were found guilty? BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T. Now I know hindsight is 20/20, but I just really can't help myself from pointing out that you can all eat your words now, because you were spouting off about something you knew absolutely nothing about. The media spun this completely away from the truth. The courts have a certain way of unravelling these types of stories, and finding out what really happened. Maybe Fitzgerald isnt the innocent victim everyone thought he was. He's certainly a war hero, and for that I respect him. But sometimes when you can't control your ego, somebody takes you down a notch.

Well, its Sept 3rd 2014 and I just heard about this today. What a despicable act and what a group of despicable people commenting on the side of the four scum bags who so gutlessly implicated themselves by assaulting Collin Fitzgerald 7 years ago. Travis Baldwin GUILTY. Sentenced to 60 days in jail, served on weekends. 10 year prohibtion from weapons and 2 years probation.
Jeremy Stewart GUILTY. 90 days jail and the rest of sentence same as piece of trash above.
Ian Tait charges withdrawn.
What do you BIG MOUTH supporters of these gutless shits have to say now? EDUCATE yourselves about PTSD and consider what these MORONS have done to Collin and his family. You heartless, selfish scum.
